Brief
Think about your practice and use the winter holiday to position yourself in the creative world.
Consider how would you bring order from chaos.

I was inspired by Lauren Lee McCarthy’s – Social Turkers project where she employed Amazon Mechanical Turk workers to direct her actions in real-time, during dates.
After analysing various aspects of my practice I realised I am fascinated by technology, algorithms and how seemingly automated processes are in fact mere expressions of abstracted human interactions, sometimes hidden and other times quite overt. I am deeply concerned by one particularly problematic aspect of ‘technology’ which is the fetishising of its ‘neutrality’ as if technology on its own could somehow escape from the hegemony of ideology (Chun) instead of being a direct reflection of it. Amazon’s Mechanical Turk somehow represents in my view all of the above ideas simultaneously – it is an expression of the shift in human labour towards a precarious model of competing workers offering services for a minimum payment, it is presented as an automated service complementing and acting as a de-facto virtual AI automated algorithm, but relying on actual humans giving their input.
Because of the service’s emphasis on automation and its comparison to synthetic entities I wanted to explore and bring to the surface the humanity behind its interface.

Therefore, in a literal comment on labour, authorship and algorithms I employed Mechanical Turks workers to answer the question of the brief and used their unfiltered responses and read them in class as a manifesto.

Big data when it is not filtered by any algorithms or definitions is seeming chaos. Yet we seem to instinctively feel that there is some order in that endless sea of information. |

Make yourself feel calm. Be direct in what you want to feel. Write down your plan on how to get to that feeling. That way, you can achieve some order in chaos. |

APJTLCUG7TU62 | Tue Jan 14 20:19:25 PST 2020 | I believe that the best way to achieve order from chaos is to decide on a goal and then create systems that channel the chaos in ways that allow progress towards that goal, rather than trying to put a stop to the chaos altogether. |
A1VE6VNQJO0U88 | Tue Jan 14 18:15:14 PST 2020 | Considering that chaos happens when the majority is angry and uncomfortable, realize they must be helped to be at least more comfortable and then they’ll be more receptive to venting their anger in more reasonable ways. So comfortable means having shelter, warmth, nutrition, and an income, so promised that is coming and set about making it all happen. When people are comfy, things are okay; when they’re not comfy, nothing else matters much– including being civilized. If people don’t have their dependent needs met, then their society implodes. Makes sense, doesn’t it? |
